My latest fad!! Rajasthani soldiers…
For those who know me this won’t come too much as a surprise: difficulty does not prevent me from doing anything. Importing a Fatboy mattress from France?? It was actually quite tough because though it was light, the size of the carton was too big so Air France wanted to charge me 200€. So I emptied the beans in plastic bags, put the plastic bags in cartons and sticked the...

Tchak tchak tchak
A comment on my blog gave me the ideas to write about Geckos… I have very little experience with them and I don’t really mind them. But some people react to Geckos the way I react with rats… The most memorable story I have with a Gecko is when I pretended to smash one with the electric racket for mosquitoes. Shiv jumped!! Probably because he was scared of the stain on...

Arachnid story
First pee break in Assam. First encounter… This lady was not moving so I decided to pee anyways – but askew, in order to watch her. Two days later, on Majuli island. We are exploring the monastery guest house: we have to pump the water and the loo is Indian. So be it, we can accommodate! I go for a pee. Shit, I forgot...

Talking about hair…
Cf: http://www.indiandacoit.com/archive/2011/05/03/think-twice-before-getting-a-hair-cut.html I have often seen guys with this kind of haircut: shaved head with a rat tail kind of thing (a strand of hair called here Choti ). Considering this is pretty ugly, I have always believed it had to mean something. So I showed this picture to my colleagues who did not really know...

Think twice before getting a hair cut!
In India, hair is really important. I tried to look for proper article on the same but could not find anything really so I will gather a few things I can remember about it! There are temples where people shave off and give their hair as an offering to god – which hair is then sent to Italy, treated and recycled in very expensive wigs). There are the Jaïn nuns who...

Untouchables, again...
I will finish my story on the “Backwards” (cf http://www.indiandacoit.com/archive/2011/04/14/and-you-what-s-your-little-name.html ) I have been told that my note was full of contempt and condescension. But this system is really contemptible! I will quote here an expert, Marc Boulet who wrote this book “ In the skin of an Intouchable ” – he basically learned Hindi...

Majuli Island - Part 2
Majuli Island, Assam - April 2011 Majuli Island, a land forgotten by the time... It is now becoming famous, thankf to its "dancing monks" who live in "Satras" (monasteries). These monks pray Vishnu, in his Krishna avatar - there are different branches and rules depending on the monasteries... ... These monks (or "bhakats" -...

Assamese break!
2 years ago I went for work to Guwahati, in Assam. I had strictly no idea where Assam was but since there was work there, why not go? I realised fast enough that I was far, far away from Mumbai. No internet (except in private houses) even with the datacard, constant electricity cut-offs. An incredible number of insects. I was there for work remember, so all this was quite unexpected!!...
