This year I like Diwali!

Because this year my Diwali gift is a trip to Paris (far far away from the crackers), I wish you, along with my office neighbours, a very happy Diwali!!

A representation of Vishnu in a Hindu temple

Last month I brought foreign guests to a Hindu temple in Delhi ( Chattarpur Mandir) . They were amazed by the noise (that particular temple had 6 TVs blasting music!). We are far from the pious meditation of churches… It is also much less clean – this is a known-fact, not a criticism!   There are a lot of visuals in Hindu mythology and I was quite amazed by the giant stage...

A strange creeping thing...

If you spend some time in India, you will very surely come across cockroaches, lizards, spiders, all very normal! And if you pay some attention, you will probably see this thing too:   Well maybe you have wondered what it is?? It is called “ Plaster bagworms ” or “household case bearer” or “ Household Case-bearing Moth” ( Phereoeca allutella for the Indian...

Not fresh my fish??

It all started a few months after I arrived in Mumbai… I had been hunting a rat in my flat, without success, when this horrid smell started. Shit, it must be dead in an impossible place to find!! I started looking anyway, without success again. I then stepped out of my flat, only to realise that the whole neighbourhood smelled of dead rat! To be accurate, of dead...

Tell me, what is a papaya??

The other day, I asked my favourite Indian to buy a papaya. And there he is, asking me what a papaya looks like?!! And here he goes, googling “papaya”!!   The following day I come back on the subject: “Tell me, if you do not know with what a papaya looks like, can I deduce from that that you have never cut one before?” “No.” “And an apple?”...

Trash

One of the first questions when I settled down in India: hey, how do we do with the trash? Instructions from my landlady: you put it in the trash can and you leave the can outside your door every evening. And every morning, magic, the trash is empty!! And sorting out the trash?? No?? Okay okay…   A few months later, looking for my bike downstairs, I saw two women...

To finish with my bed sheet stories…

I have noticed that 2 out of 3 hotels – the hotels fancy enough to have AC and thus a (puff) quilt – that the quilt is the other way around. The opening is next to the pillow. Nothing dramatic here but still a bit annoying! It got me thinking… Most probably, none of the people handling those quilts, have ever used one – either they do not need one in the hot parts of the country or they...

Inappropriate mini-shorts in India?

In French, we have this expression « to cut a short to someone ». Which means to undermine someone’s integrity (physical or psychological). And there is this Bollywood movie, Tashan (which has no interest but for its dances) where Kareena Kapoor literally cut herself a short! She is in a truck, in Ladakh, with goats bearing their winter coat (hence we can assume that the...
