Pentecostal narratives, a techne designed to deal with rapid changes?

In a few days, a symposium on Pentecostalism and Transnationalism will be held at the University of Western Sydney. Far from old Europe and France? Not so far actually.

Annalisa Butticci's documentary on African Pentecostals is focused on Italy. And Mark Hutchinson's paper (University of Western Sydney) appears very stimulating to explain Pentecostal narratives in France and Europe. His point is that "internal stories of pentecostals are a source for understanding the movement as a form of ‘techne’ for dealing with rapidly changing contexts, in particular those associated with globalisation". Mes films de la rentrée 2009... et au-delà !

Je cite Buzz L'éclair mais je ne l'imite que pâlement... Des mois que je vais au cinéma, que je fais chauffer ma carte UGC à en devenir rose fluo de fidélité et pourtant, je ne te dis rien. Non, je ne t'ai rien dit des navets, des grands moments, de ce que j'ai vibré, pleuré, pesté, senti ma gorge se serrer. Et pourtant, je te jure qu'il y a des choses à dire.

Je vais donc essayer de rattrapper ce retard avec pas moins de 27 films, et j'ai dû en oublier, et je n'aurai sûrement pas la mémoire si fiable et fraîche que je le voudrais mais je vais tenter de te dire quelle pépite il ne faut pas rater, quel film tu pourras voir en DVD un dimanche etc.

Et puis, comme je ne serai pas là de la semaine, pas la peine de rechigner, genre "c'est super trop long comme post, personne n'en veut" parce que personne n'a dit que tu devais tout te taper d'un coup, hein, tu as la semaine pour le lire. Et puis je peux bien te le dire, je ne ferai pas d'interro écrite...

Dans les films qui suivent, tu trouveras du Woody, du Clint, de l'allemand, de l'anglais, de l'américo-français, du français, de l'argentin, Scarlett, Julia, Clive et tous les autres. Même le dernier Ken Loach, avec Eric Cantona, vu en avant-première grâce à cet Eric -là (juste à temps pour qu'on puisse en parler au bar du Martinez à Cannes)

Vicky Cristina Barcelona***

Bon, on va sans doute dire que sur Javier je suis pas objective, mais oui il est à tomber raide dans ce film, beau, ténébreux, tête à claques. Il est aussi entouré de bombes, et Woody Allen s'y connait en jolies femmes : Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz et Rebeca Hall (une très jolie découverte). Le film bénéficie de la lumière de l'arrière saison espagnole (si mes souvenirs sont exacts) et des jolis décors ibères. Le scénario est un peu facile et je n'en garde que le jeu de Javier, Penelope et Rebecca. On est tout de même mieux que dans Scoop (le flop de Woody) mais bien loin de Match Point... Moi j'aime pas Woody en général, je l'aime en particulier sur des one-shot, et je hisse ce drame sentimental à la hauteur de ces one-shot pour le casting surtout.

Mes stars et moi***

Drôle et décalé, ce film est servi par un super casting. j'ai passé un très bon moment et beaucoup ri. A voir !

Pour elle**

Ce film est déroutant, mais l'histoire m'a emmenée et j'ai passé un bon moment. Malgré Vincent Lindon dont je ne suis pas fan, malgré la froideur de Diane Kruger que je ne trouve pas vraiment actrice. on notera le petit rôle d'Olivier Marchal. Un film à mater le dimanche.

Two Lovers***

Joaquim Phénix est top, Gwyneth Paltrow reste lumineuse et cette histoire est vieille comme le monde. J'ai beaucoup aimé.

Le prix de la loyauté****

On n'est pas dans La nuit nous appartient, mais pas loin. C'est un grand polar comme j'aime où y'a les gentils et les pourris et où les deux camps sont représentés dans une même famille. la scène finale est grandiose.

La frontière de l'aube*

Etonnant. Et dérangeant. c'ets tout ce dont je me souviens.

Australia***

Le petit garçon est sublime. Les paysages aussi (j'ai toujours envie d'aller en Australie), Hugh Jackman est aussi beau que d'habitude, Nicole bouge encore quelques muscles sur le visage. l'histoire c'est une saga comme Autant en emporte le vent ou un truc du genre, moi j'ai vraiment bien aimé.

Tout sauf en famille*

De la grosse comédie américaine, qui passera un dimanche en DVD mais n'en attendez pas plus.

Secret Défense

Aucun intérêt. Même Lanvin est décevant.

El Che***

Benicio del Toro pourrait me réciter le botin... Mais là en plus, il joue bien alors cette fresque historico-romancée du révolutionnaire barbu, ça vaut le déplacement.

The Wrestler***

Je suis allée voir Mickey Rourke pour son bouquet final un peu forcée. J'ai été agréablement surprise : c'est un beau film. Les premières minutes Mickey est filmé de dos, au point qu'on se demande si le cinéaste ne s'est pas dit "il a trop morflé on va faire tout le film de dos" ce qui met déjà bien dans l'ambiance. Mais non, vite on le voit. Et oui il a morflé. Mais il joue très bien ce vieux catcheur au bout du rouleau. A voir, pour la performance d'acteur au moins.

Gran torino****

Bon, j'ai adoré. Clairement. Entièrement. Clint a 102 ans, mais qu'est ce que je l'aime dans ce film. Dur, mauvais, grossier mais si droit dans ces bottes cet homme-là. La voiture est jolie et l'histoire est belle. J'ai pleuré beaucoup à la fin, au poing d'avoir mal à la gorge et ça a marché les 2 fois où j'ai vu ce grand film. (t'as compris que je te le conseillais hein?)

Boy A****

Un film super dur. Tellement que j'ai regretté y être allée seule et ne pas pouvoir en parler après avec quelqu'un. Un film beau. Un acteur de premier choix, tellement bouleversant. Une réalité difficile. Un film dérangeant parce qu'on n'aime aps la fin mais qu'en tant qu'être civilisé on sait qu'il ne peut y en avoir d'autre.

Le code a changé**

J'ai été déçue. j'aimais le casting, j'aimais le pitch mais je n'ai pas aimé le film. Trop lourd, trop dense pour finalement pas grand chose. Une scène à voir malgré tout : Patrick Chesnais et Pierre Arditi qui dansent le rock n'roll, un moment d'anthologie.

Espion(s)***

Guillaume Canet je suis fan, Géraldine Pailhas aussi. On partait donc plutôt bien et en plus Londres je suis fan (fais pas celui qui sait pas hein). Je n'ai pas été déçue, une vraie histoire d'espionnage avec ce qu'il faut de romance entre deux bons acteurs, c'est un film à voir.

Last chance for love****

Une jolie histoire d'amour improbable avec une Emma thomson comme je l'aime, lumineuse, écorchée, si british et un Dustin Hoffman gauguenard, loser et so american. Le tout emballé dans ce Londres que j'aime. c'est un film à filles mais j'achète.

Slumdog Millionaire*****

Du bonheur en barre. Des couleurs, des épices, des douleurs, des nausées, de l'amour, des chants, du jeu télé, des bonnes réponses improbables tissant la trame d'un récit rythmé comme il faut. Des sourires, des larmes au coin des yeux, tout y est. Slumdog c'est magique. Juste ça donne pas méga envie d'Inde hein...

Marley & Moi***

Sont cons. Ils m'ont fait pleuré avec leur histoire de clébard. Une jolie histoire, bien jouée et attachante et ce chien est extra. Jenifer Aniston et Owen Wilson sont super chouettes en amoureux qui construisent une grande famille. A voir !

Dans la brume électrique*

Trop. Tommy Lee Jones en fait trop. L'histoire part trop en vrille. La Lousiane est trop présente. Tavernier n'a pas réussi à faire prendre cette mayonnaise-là. Dommage.

Rachel se marie****

Anne Hattaway est sublime en junkie juste sortie de cure. Ses rapports avec sa soeur sont intenses et très troublants. Cette histoire de famille démolie mais essayant d'être heureuse malgré tout m'a bouleversée. Pourtant ce n'est pas un grand film, mais j'ai été si surprise (m'attendant à un film de "fille") que j'ai pris de plein fouet ce drame-là, la prouesse des acteurs si justes, entre fêlures et carapace. Un film à ne pas rater pour qui aime les histoires de famille (celle-ci étant un poil psychotique quand même).

Into the wild**

Premier film que j'ai vu en HD. Bon choix, la photographie et les paysages sont sublimes. Il faut dire qu'ils ont le premier rôle. L'histoire est lente, et sans surprise mais bien racontée et j'ai aimé le rythme du film. Ce ne sera pas mon film préféré mais je suis ravie de l'avoir vu. Sean Penn n'en devient que plus intrigant...

Monstres vs Aliens*

Ce film d'animation n'a rien de transcendant, iol n'apport rien de vraiment nouveau. Il subsite quelques passages drôles et la voix de Hugh Laurie sur un cafard est pour le moins inhabituelle. A garder pour les jours de blizzard hein.

Ponyo sur la falaise****

Le dernier Hayao Miyazaki est l'adaption nippone de la petite sirène. C'est, comme d'habitude, un travail super abouti, tous les détails sont travaillés et le résultat m'a beaucoup plu. Le film s'adresse à un public enfantin mais peut plaire à toute la famille. En VO, Ponyo est super drôle et j'ai passé un bon moment.

Duplicity**

Bon... Le scénario va de rebondissements en rebondissements. A tel point que j'ai vite perdu tout intérêt pour l'histoire d'espionage. En revanche, Julia Roberts et Clive Owen (surtout Clive...) jouent plutôt bien et sont des acteurs que j'aime bien, donc pour un film du dimanche soir ça va, mais pas plus.

La Vague****

Ce film est un coup de poing. En VO il prend des accents de déjà-vu, l'allemand dans toute sa démesure et dans toute la violence qui lui reste accroché après les années noires. C'est l'histoire d'une semaine thématique dans un lycée. C'est l'histoire d'un jeune prof qui aurait voulu avoir pour thème "l'anarchie" mais qui s'y prenant trop tard récoltera "l'autocratie". C'est l'histoire de jeunes gens qui pensent qu'on apprend de l'histoire et qu'une telle erreur ne peut pas se reproduire. C'est l'histoire des excès de l'adolescence. C'est une histoire vieille comme le monde autour du pouvoir et de la cruauté des hommes. C'est un jeu de rôle qui tourne mal. J'ai vraiment beaucoup aimé le traitement de ce sujet difficile. Les jeunes acteurs et le prof sont super justes. Ce film devrait être montré dans les lycées car les allemands ne si sont pas les seuls concernés... C'est un film qui nous apprend que nous sommes humains, et qu'il faut rester vigilant.

Frost vs Nixon, l'heure de vérité****

Alors que revoilà Rebecca Hall (la jolie qui pétille de Vicky Cristina Barcelona). Ce film est un vrai beau moment de cinéma. L'acteur qui campe David Frost est aussi celui qui excelle en Tony Blair dans The Queen, et y'a pas à dire ce mec là il "déboîte" (comme disent les jeunes ahah). Et aussi, il a vraiment le sourire du chat d'Alice. Bref, le film est bien mené, la lumière est très bien et la photographie aussi. Pour les faits historiques je ne ssuis aps une spécialiste de cette période, mais ça m'a paru correspondre à mes lointains souvenirs d'hitsoire des USA et le moment où Nixon tombe le masque est magique (il y a aussi ce coup de fil nocturne hallucinant). Bref, à ne pas rater.

Looking for Eric****

Le dernier Ken Loach interpelle. Déjà, Eric Cantona est à l'affiche ensuite la presse ne sait pas vraiment où le classer (pourtant Ken Loach n'est pas le spécialiste de la comédie) bref, Looking for Eric sera présenté à Cannes pour le festival de mai prochain. Moi, chercher un Eric, c'est pas le plus dur hein, j'en ai quelques uns super près du coeur. Justement, j'en ai accompagné un à l'avant première la semaine dernière. Que dire de cet OVNI ? C'est la fable prolétaire d'Eric, postier de Manchester qui élève seul ses deux fils et qui sent sa vie lui échapper (elle est déjà un peu loin). Eric n'a qu'un trésor : une affiche grandeur nature de son héros Eric Cantona à qui il va s'en remettre pour se raccrocher à la vie. Un film dur, tendre, attachant, drôle, comme une sauce aigre douce un peu. Avec des vrais rires (merci Mister Cantona, en VO comme en anglais ses répliques sont extras, et véridiques la plupart du temps ce qui ne les rends que plus croustillantes, nous avons un nouveau Van Damme) ce film m'a vraiment plu, et pourtant j'ai failli partir au bout d'une demie heure. Alors je ne saurai que trop de conseiller de rester dans ton siège, ce film-là vaut le coup. Really.

WYD 2008 in Sydney : Benedict XVI & Catholicism Down Under (interview)

The next World Youth Days (WYD), a Catholic event organised every two or three years, will be held from July 15th to July 20th in Sydney, Australia. The Catholic Church isi expecting 125,000 international visitors and it will be the opportunity for the pope himself to visit Australia for the first time.
I’ve asked Marion Maddox, an Australian scholar specialist in Churches-State relationships and director of the Centre for Social Inclusion at the Macquarie University in Sydney to tell us in what context these Days occur and what kind of impact they may have on an Australian youth who seems not likely to be interested in the conservative discourse of Benedict XVI.

The Roman Catholic Church has chosen Sydney to hold its 2008 World Youth Days (WYD). Is there any chance this could attract young Australians?
I find it quite hard to understand what WYD is trying to achieve. It is presenting itself as aimed at youth, with a focus on freshness and modernity; but at the same time, it's a celebration of a certain kind of Catholic traditionalism. For example, Cardinal Pell has asked to have St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney designated as an official pilgrimage site which will entitle those who visit it for prayer during the WYD celebrations to a plenary indulgence; confessional booths are being set up around the city (despite the fact that, until recently pressured by Rome to restore the traditional confessional, Australian Catholics had scarcely used it, preferring the collective 'third rite' confession during Mass). I expect that the event will attract young Catholics, particularly those of a traditionalist mind-set, but it seems to have been designed more as an event for reinforcing Catholic identity than as an attempt to attract the unconverted.

Does the organization of these WYD in Sydney interest Australians, beyond the Catholic circles?
The main impact WYD is having on non-Catholic Australians so far is negative. Newspapers are asking questions about the amount of government money supporting it; roads will be blocked and Sydney's already overstretched public transport system will be even more strained; city office workers have been asked to take the week off work if possible so as to minimise overcrowding; special laws impose a A$5000 fine for "causing annoyance" to WYD pariticipants; police have said that anyone participating in a protest (eg groups representing survivors of clergy sexual abuse) will have to have their placards and messages approved beforehand. All this has contributed to public cynicism and irritation.
Of course, this may change once the Pope arrives and the negative news stories are overtaken by positive events.

What is the current situation of the Australian Catholic Church? The pope himself seems to consider an attempt to reconquest part of the lost ground (the “new evangelisation”) rather than a visit to a conquered land.
Australian Catholics are predominantly made up of three waves of migrants: first, poor Irish workers and convicts, and the clergy and religious who came to look after them; then, after World War II, southern European (especially Italian) workers; and, most recently, Catholics from Vietnam and other Asian countries.
Catholicism is Australia's largest denomination, with around 26% of the population, but Australia is culturally very secular and only a minority of that 26% would attend Mass regularly. While church attendance figures (for all denominations) have fallen since the 1950s, that was an unusually religious period; since European settlement, religion has played only a minor part in Australia's public culture and little or no part in national identity. So, if the Pope is attempting to regain 'lost ground', he might need to ask himself whether the church really ever had that much ground. Historically, Catholics suffered a lot of discrimination in Australia (for example, in employment) and were looked down on as poor and under-educated. The last half of the last century saw that turn around, with generous government support for Catholic schools, for example. Catholics used also to be strongly associated with the political Left (the Australian Labor Party). In terms of voting patterns that is still true, though not as strongly as in decades gone by. But Catholics, once extremely rare on the conservative side of politics, are now strongly represented in the parliamentary parties of the Right.

Is the Australian Catholic Church conservative or liberal?
Both; in recent years, the liberal voice has been more prominent, especially on issues of justice, peace and the environment. Catholic organisations were very important voices in drawing public attention to the previous government's harsh treatment of asylum seekers, for example, and have often been strong advocates for the poor, for workers'rights, and for Indigenous peoples.
However, Australia's most senior Catholic, Cardinal George Pell, is generally regarded as conservative, particularly on theological issues but also on social issues. Also, different parts of the Catholic church have different political flavours. Some of the most prominent liberal voices represent religious orders rather than the church hierarchy, for example.
It has to be said, too, that even the more liberal parts of the church are not always good at standing for the oppressed when the question concerns the church itself. A recent example is the letter from the Australian Catholic bishops unanimously criticising a retired bishop, Geoffrey Robinson, who wrote a book about sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

Is it right to say that Australia is a deeply secularised society?
Yes. Around 70% of Australians claim some religious belief or affiliation, but only a very small proportion make it a central part of their lives. Around 9% of Australians say they go to church weekly.

In your book God under Howard(1), you explored the relations between politics and religion under the conservative government of John Howard. The new Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd presents himself as a strong Christian from Catholic origin but doesn’t seem to be willing to use it in politics. Does he exemplify the position of many Australian Catholics?
Actually, Kevin Rudd is an Anglican; he was raised a Catholic but became an Anglican in adulthood (though when I interviewed him in 1999, he told me that 'the possibility of doing a Cardinal Newman [ie converting to Catholicism] always remains'. He has talked a lot about his faith, particularly before he became Prime Minister. One of his early moves to establish a profile as a potential leader was to write a pair of magazine articles about the German Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. (I suspect he might be the first Australian Prime Minister in a very long time who could even name a 20th Century theologian, let alone write a learned essay about one!) Since the election, his faith comes through less in explicit statements than in more symbolic ways; for example, his February 2008 apology to the 'Stolen Generations' (of Indigenous Australians taken from their families in childhood) had a decidedly liturgical feel. Mainline churchgoers tend to see religion as something that might well inform one's politics but about which politicians shouldn't be too explicit. For most of Australian political history, politicians thought so too. The recent interest in our representatives' personal faith partly reflects the Americanisation of Australian politics and an increased focus on politicians' personal features generally (marriage, family life, personality etc). Given that only a small proportion of voters actually do go to church regularly, we have to look for the wider effects of politicians' religiosity. God Under Howard argues that secular Australians quite like a certain amount of religiosity in our politicians. Politicians have a reputation for being cynical and self-serving; but, when they emphasise a religious identity, it reassures us that they stand for some higher set of values (even if they are values that few voters actually share).

Australia is a country of immigration. How the immigrations of the last three decades have influenced the profile of Australian Christianity, in particular Catholicism? More widely, what is the place of religious issues in the debates on multiculturalism?
Each wave of migration has brought a new ethnic dimension to Australian Catholicism. Also, each wave of migration has created a new group of easily-identified newcomers who can become the target of racist or other kinds of fears. At the moment, the big multicultural discussion about religion is to do with Islam. Ten or fifteen years ago, it was whether and how Indigenous peoples' religious traditions should be protected eg by laws preventing mining or development on sacred sites. Fifty years ago, the point of tension was antagonism between Catholics and Protestants (though the word 'multiculturalism' was not used back then). Religion itself is usually not important in such debates; often criticising religion is a way of distancing others without mentioning race.
