NEW YORK, June 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Public television needs to reinvent itself around the mission of journalism.

That's the message David Fanning, executive producer of "FRONTLINE," had for the nearly 100 people who attended18th annual Fred Friendly First Amendment Award luncheon Tuesday at the Metropolitan Club. The award, presented by the School of Communications at Quinnipiac, acknowledges one of the most basic constitutional rights and honors those who have shown courage and forthrightness in preserving it.

"I'd suggest we put together a Public Journalism Fund foundations, individuals, major donors and public money and we go out and simply get together the best journalists we can hire," Fanning said. "And make sure to bring in with them a new generation of young reporters who are used to the daily demands, the drumbeat of reporting in the digital world."

Fanning told the audience, which included Charles Gibson, the former anchor of ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson," Susan Filan, senior legal analyst at MSNBC, and Gay Talese, the best-selling author, that if done smartly, his idea would get a lot of attention.

"This is not one more collection of bloggers, but an editorial effort that will concentrate on enterprise reporting," Fanning said. "That's going to be the most valuable commodity around in a universe of instant news and disposable punditry."

Fanning said he believes currently public broadcasting is threatening its special status as non-commercial media. "I'm told that in surveys, the public doesn't notice the ads online, and is not offended. I'm not surprised we all swim in a sea of commercialism but that's precisely why we need to keep ourselves clean of it.

"Because one day, I am afraid, when most of our work is going to be experienced on the web, we will wake up and the public will say we're no different from the rest of them. Why should we give you our membership money? And why should the government give you our tax dollars? I don't need to wonder what Fred Friendly would think about the enterprise he called broadcasting's last best chance."

Pandora shares plunge; IPO investors suffer losses

Pandora Media Inc (P.N) shares plunged as much as 25 percent on Thursday, sending it below its IPO price and burning investors who had once clamored for a piece of what was touted as a red-hot sale.

During its second day of trade, doubts mounted about whether the online radio company would ever turn a profit and compete with its Internet rivals, causing investors to bail out of the stock from the earliest hours of the session.

Shares closed at $13.26, down $4.16 or 24 percent, on the New York Stock Exchange. This is below the $16 per share IPO price, meaning investors who bought the stock as it went public have lost money.

Analysts advised investors to avoid buying the stock because shares are too pricey and do not reflect how the company will do competing against its rivals.

BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield put a sell rating on the stock and a $5.50 price target on it.

"Its business model does not scale in the same way as other successful Internet businesses," Greenfield said.

The research note also raised questions about the company being able to sustain itself on advertising and how its content costs for its music are eating into its profit.

The bigger Pandora's audience gets, the more it must pay record labels in licensing fees, hurting the mostly free radio service's chances of becoming profitable.

Other analysts on Thursday said Pandora would have problems thriving in the competitive landscape for online music.

"In our estimation, Pandora is just not an attractive way to play. What's their competitive advantage? They don't have one," said Morningstar analyst Rick Summer, adding that he expects shares to tumble to $6.00.

Pandora is facing off against traditional radio companies, satellite radio provider Sirius XM Radio Inc (SIRI.O), music services such as Rhapsody and offerings from Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Google Inc (GOOG.O) and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O).

Another major concern about Pandora is the bigger its audience gets, the more it must pay record labels in licensing fees, hurting the mostly free radio service's chances of becoming profitable.

On Wednesday in its stock market debut, Pandora shares surged 48 percent in early trade but then reversed course and closed at $17.42, not far above their IPO price. The company said it raised $235 million from its IPO.

Pandora, which has been around for over a decade, runs a service that allows listeners to create music playlists. It has about 90 million registered users.

Tattoo artist says Casey Anthony seemed normal, happy

An Orlando tattoo artist who said he has known accused child killer Casey Anthony for seven years testified on Tuesday that she made an appointment for a tattoo on July 15, 2008 -- the same day her 2-year-old daughter Caylee was reported missing.

Casey, 25, is standing trial in Florida on a first-degree murder charge stemming from her daughter's June 16, 2008 death. The trial, which has drawn widespread TV coverage and national attention, is in its fourth week.

Caylee was reported missing after her grandmother found Casey's car, reeking of the odor of death, in an impound lot. The child's remains were found in woods a 10-minute walk from the Anthony family's home on December 11, 2008 after a nationwide search.

Bobby Williams, an artist at Cast Iron Tattoos, said Casey had come into his shop to get a tattoo earlier in July, and he applied a flowing script saying "Bella Vita" (beautiful life) to her back at the shoulder blade.

"She seemed normal," Williams testified. "She didn't seem upset about anything, she seemed happy for the most part."

Williams said Casey talked on the phone, ordered a pizza that she shared with him, and paid $65 in cash for the tattoo.

The next time Williams saw Casey was on July 15. She came to the shop to set up another appointment for her and a friend to get tattoos on July 19, he said. Again, she seemed normal and happy.

Williams said he was aware Casey had a daughter and testified that she said Caylee was with a nanny when he saw her on July 15. He said Casey told him the toddler would be with her on the 19th when she came in for her next appointment.

EXPERTS DISCUSS HAIR AND STICKERS

Earlier Tuesday, an FBI expert on forensic mitochondrial DNA testified that a single strand of hair from Casey's car trunk had the same profile as a buccal, or mouth, smear from the defendant.

An additional sample of hair tested later also matched the profile, expert Catherine Theisen said.

Theisen said the test can only tell that the hair or smear came from an individual or that individual's mother or someone who shared the mother's genetics. Thus the hair from the trunk could have belonged to Casey, Caylee or Casey's mother, brother or another maternal relative.

Alina Burroughs, a crime scene investigator, described collecting evidence at the house Casey and Caylee shared with Casey's parents, Cindy and George Anthony.

Jurors saw photos of a quarter-sized heart sticker with a red glittery border sitting on an envelope and a sheet of smaller pink and purple heart-shaped stickers found in a dresser in Casey's bedroom.

An FBI examiner had testified on Monday that she saw the outline of a small heart on the duct tape prosecutors say Casey used to smother her daughter.

But during cross examination on Tuesday, defense attorney Jose Baez asked whether Burroughs noticed the price of the stamp on the envelope beneath the sticker. He pointed out that it was 37 cents and asked if she had any idea how long it had been since a stamp cost that little.

Baez also noted the items in the box where the heart-shaped stickers were found were from a baby shower scrap book.

Cindy Anthony was called back to the stand and asked questions about two canvas laundry bags found during a search of her home.

Cindy said one of the canvas bags had been used to store balls Caylee played with and the other was used to collect her stuffed animals until they moved the toys to a display.

She said the latter bag had been placed between Caylee's bed and the wall, and that she had not seen it since.

Cindy became emotional during the testimony, her voice breaking as she explained, "that whole period was very difficult for me."

Prosecutors say Caylee's body was stuffed into a canvas laundry bag and two black plastic garbage bags with yellow ties like ones also found at the Anthony home.

Cindy also was asked to describe in detail the length and color of her hair at the time of Caylee's disappearance, as well as the hair of her daughter and granddaughter.

The state is expected to wrap up its case Wednesday by submitting two more pieces of evidence. The defense is expected to begin its presentation on Thursday.

Harry Reid, Rand Paul’s Patriot Act showdown goes public

A fight over the extension of the Patriot Act played out on the Senate floor yesterday--and things got personal for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Paul chose to rise on the Senate floor in front of a national audience to give Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) a real piece of his mind.

"I rise in response to a scurrilous accusation," Paul said. "I've been accused of wanting to allow terrorists to have weapons to attack America. To be attacked of such a belief when I'm here to discuss and debate the constitutionality of the Patriot Act is offensive. I find it personally insulting. And I think it demeans the body. It demeans the Senate body and the people that we can't have an intelligent debate over the constitutionality of this."

Paul and Reid have been publicly sparring all week over the proposed extension of the anti-terrorism law, first passed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Paul, elected with support from the tea party last November, opposes reauthorizing the law in its current form, saying it violates Americans' right to privacy. Paul wanted to add amendments to the reauthorization bill, including one that would bar law enforcement from accessing certain gun records. But Reid has opposed Paul's proposed amendments, as well as other suggested modifications to the law, and insisted that the Senate should not create any lapse in the act's reauthorization.

Reid on Wednesday personally attacked Paul on the floor, with rhetoric that suggested the Kentucky senator's proposals would abet terrorist enemies of the United States.

"When the clock strikes midnight tomorrow, we will be giving terrorists the opportunity to plot against our country undetected," Reid said, referring to the law's expiration this week. "The senator from Kentucky is threatening to take away the best tools we have for stopping them."

"We all remember the tragic Fort Hood shootings less than two years ago. Radicalized American terrorists bought guns and used them to kill 13 civilians," Reid said. "It is hard to imagine why the senator would want to hold up the Patriot Act for a misguided amendment that would make American less safe."

Paul was not fighting alone. He had support from a couple of Democrats who also have argued for more oversight of the act, which permits law enforcement the use of roving wiretaps, access to library records and other controversial expansion of policing powers in the struggle against terrorism.

In the end, the majority leader won the first battle by employing procedural maneuvers to end debate. The Senate voted 79-18 Thursday morning to end cloture, which allows the Senate to move forward with an up or down vote on the measure. But Paul said he may still win .

Blackburn "furious" as fans sell tickets to United

Blackburn Rovers have expressed 'fury' at claims fans are selling season tickets to Manchester United ahead of this weekend's Premier League match between the clubs.

United will win a record 19th English title if they avoid defeat at Blackburn's Ewood Park ground on Saturday, with Rovers looking for points in their quest to avoid relegation.

Now there are concerns that United supporters wanting to see their club break the current English record of 18 titles it shares with arch-rivals Liverpool will cause security problems if they are sat amongst Rovers supporters.

"Reports that some Blackburn Rovers supporters are 'selling' their season tickets to Manchester United fans ahead of Saturday's Barclays Premier League fixture at Ewood Park have brought a furious response from the club," said a statement on Rovers' website on Tuesday.

"Club officials - fully supported by Lancashire Police - warn that everything possible is being done to minimise the illegal practice and stress that any offenders will face strong and appropriate action.

"Rovers have information and intelligence of season ticket holders selling their tickets directly to United followers - there is even evidence of season tickets being advertised on the internet."

Blackburn managing director Tom Finn said: "This is a very disturbing situation, not to mention a criminal offence, and a situation we could well do without leading up to what is a massive fixture.

"We are currently monitoring things very closely and, where necessary, will cancel the season tickets, so denying entry to the stadium on the day.

"It also goes without saying that we need as many Rovers fans inside Ewood Park on Saturday as we can.

"Fervent home support has worked wonders for us in recent years and we need it again now."

The project, slated to begin this spring, will double the power and cooling capacity of the facility which is already the largest commercially available Tier III data center in the region.

“This expansion will accommodate growth within VISI’s current facility. We will be adding a 3.0 Megawatt generator, evaporative cooling towers for 630 tons of cooling capacity, and three new Uninterrupted Power Systems (UPS) systems,” says Mike Sowada, CEO at VISI. “Additionally, on floor Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRACs) and Power Distribution Units (PDUs) will be added within the data center for power and cooling distribution.”

All of these components will be integrated into the existing data center infrastructure, which will maintain its current N+1 Uptime Institute Tier III Design certification.

Pastor free on bond in Vt. lesbian-custody case

A Christian missionary charged with helping a woman take her 9-year-old daughter to Central America during a custody dispute with her former lesbian partner was allowed Monday to remain free on $25,000 bond.

A judge released 34-year-old Amish-Mennonite pastor Timothy David Miller to the custody of a friend and said Miller — who's accused of helping arrange passage for the woman and child — could have contact with his wife but that they're not to discuss the case, since she may be a witness.

Miller is charged with aiding in the removal of a child from the U.S. and retaining a child with intent to obstruct parental rights.

The FBI said the pastor helped arrange travel for Lisa Miller and daughter Isabella Miller Jenkins, two of the principals in a long-running child custody dispute.

Lisa Miller and Janet Jenkins, of Fair Haven, Vt., were joined in a Vermont civil union in 2000 but broke up three years later after having the child.

Miller then renounced homosexuality, became an evangelical Christian and moved to Virginia, defying court-ordered visitation restrictions before disappearing in September 2009. A Vermont judge later awarded custody of the child to Jenkins, the nonbiological parent.

Since then, a federal arrest warrant has been issued for Lisa Miller, and the girl is listed as missing by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

An FBI affidavit says Timothy Miller — who is not believed to be related to Lisa Miller — helped arrange for the two to fly from Canada to Mexico and then on to Nicaragua, where he was associated with Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries. They were allegedly housed for some time at a beach house owned by a businessman with links to Liberty University, of Lynchburg, Va., the FBI said.

Timothy Miller hasn't commented on the charges. Public defender Steven Barth declined to comment and said Miller would have none.

Miller was arrested in Alexandria, Va., last week. He entered no plea Monday and was not required to under federal court rules. A probable cause hearing was set for May 10.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Conroy released Miller to the "third party custody" of Richard Huber, of Myerstown, Pa. He also barred him from traveling anywhere but Pennsylvania and Vermont and told him to have no contact with people named in the criminal complaint who may be called as witnesses.

The defendant is allowed to have contact with his wife but they're not to discuss the case, Conroy said.

Miller got a show of support at the hearing from about 20 Mennonite followers who packed the courtroom benches, the women wearing traditional head coverings.

Among them were his wife, Joanna, and four children. She wouldn't comment on the charges against her husband, nor would several other people in the group.

"We believe the Lord wants us to fear him and honor him in everything we do," said Loyal Martin, 40, of Philadelphia, N.Y., who was part of the group. "We believe Timothy was doing that. But we leave the results to the Lord."

According to Martin, Miller was apprehended as he was flying from Nicaragua to Pennsylvania to attend a wedding.

"I'm hopeful this is a step toward finding my daughter safe," said Jenkins, who sat through the hearing with her attorney.

Bangladesh go into Friday's World Cup match against Ireland determined to resurrect their campaign by avenging two successive losses to their rivals at major events.

Ireland defeated Bangladesh by 74 runs in the now-scrapped Super Eights round in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean and then won by six wickets in the World Twenty20 in England in 2009.

Bangladesh cannot afford another defeat, having lost their opening match against India by 87 runs last Saturday, setting the stage for a keenly contested day-night match.

"No one likes to lose, so yes, we want to beat them and take revenge," said wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim ahead of the Group B clash at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

"Ireland are a good team but we will try to spoil their party and make sure that it is not the other way around."

Ireland have trained hard over the last few months to adjust to the unfamiliar conditions of the sub-continent, but Rahim was confident the visitors can be beaten.

"No matter how much they practice here, they will find it hard to cope with our world-class spinners," he said of the leading non-Test side.

"We are expected to win against Ireland and will try to live up to everyone's expectations. The only pressure is the challenge to prove ourselves in big tournaments."

Playing before 25,000 boisterous Bangladeshi fans will test Irish resolve, just as it did in 2008 when Bangladesh won all three one-day internationals at the same venue.

Rahim's Irish counterpart Niall O'Brien, however, said those defeats will not make a difference as his side prepared for their first match.

"That was a long time ago," he said. "We have beaten Bangladesh three of the last four times we have played them. Our confidence is high because we know we have a good enough team to win here."

Ireland's squad includes nine players who took part in the memorable 2007 campaign, where they knocked out Pakistan from the first round before taking Bangladesh in their stride.

The Irish will be boosted by the presence of batsman Ed Joyce, who played 17 one-dayers for England before opting to turn out for the land of his birth.

Bangladesh must beat both the non-Test nations, Ireland and the Netherlands, and one of the established sides from England, South Africa and the West Indies, to progress to the next round.

Bangladesh emerged from the defeat against India with a few positives, including a spirited chase of the massive 371-run target as Tamim Iqbal made 70 and Shakib hit a fluent 55 off 50 balls.

But the Tigers' bowlers took a beating at the hands of the rampaging India, with seamer Shafiul Islam going for 69 runs in his seven overs and new-ball partner Rubel Hossain conceding 60 runs in 10 wicketless overs.

Former captain Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh's most successful one-day batsman with 3,360 runs from 164 matches, may be included in the side after being ignored against India.

Ashraful could replace off-spinner Naeem Islam, or even seamer Rubel Hossain if Bangladesh choose to attack Ireland with a three-man spin attack led by skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak.

Ford to recall F-150 pickups over air bags

Under government pressure, Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it will recall nearly 150,000 F-150 pickup trucks to fix air bags that could deploy without warning.

The recall covers trucks from the 2005-2006 model years in the United States and Canada for what the auto company calls a "relatively low risk" of the air bag deploying inadvertently.

The recall, however, is much smaller in scope than what the government had requested. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, citing 77 injuries, told the company in a November 2010 memo that the recall should cover 1.3 million F-150 trucks from the 2004-2006 model years.

The F-150 is the flagship of Ford's popular F-Series pickup trucks, the best-selling vehicle in America. The government expanded its investigation into the air bag problems in January 2010.

A Transportation Department spokeswoman said the agency was currently reviewing Ford's response to see if the recall was adequate. If the government determines that the recall is too limited, it could lead to a rare public hearing to decide whether Ford should expand its safety action.

NHTSA said in a Nov. 24 memo that it knew of 238 cases in which the air bags improperly deployed and noted that Ford made production changes to the trucks in 2006 and 2007 to fix the air bag wiring and other issues.

Government regulators said in the memo that Ford did not believe the issue "warrants any corrective action" because the number of reports and incidents were low, owners received "adequate warning" from the air bag warning light and the "resulting injuries are minor in nature."

Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said in a statement Wednesday that the recall covered trucks built at the Norfolk, Va., assembly plant from November 2004 through June 2005.

Sherwood said the majority of the complaints involved trucks built during the first shift of production at the Norfolk plant and the rates of air bags accidentally deploying were much higher in trucks built at the Virginia plant than those built at plants in Michigan and Missouri.

Ford said an air bag wire located in the steering wheel could have been improperly positioned so it would chafe, expose bare copper and create the possibility of a short circuit that would light up the airbag warning lamp.

Ford said most of the air bag issues happened within the first few seconds of the vehicle starting up and the company said it was aware of "one customer that jumped from the vehicle" after the air bag deployed while the truck was parked in a driveway.

The recall, which was first reported by the Detroit News, is expected to begin in early March. Owners will be notified and told to bring their truck to their dealer.

US: Pirates held for 4 US deaths may face trial

A U.S. military spokesman said Wednesday it was possible that 15 pirates detained after the killing of four American yacht enthusiasts could be sent to the United States to face trial.

The military, FBI and Justice Department are working on the next steps for the pirates, said Bob Prucha, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command in Florida. The 15 are currently being held on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which is in the waters off East Africa.

A pirate aboard the hijacked yacht Quest on Tuesday fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a U.S. warship that had responded to last Friday's hijacking. Then gunfire broke out aboard the yacht. When Navy special forces reached the Quest, they found the four American hostages had been shot and killed.

The FBI is investigating the killings of Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle of Seattle, Washington, and Jean and Scott Adam of Marina del Rey, near Los Angeles, who had made their home aboard their 58-foot yacht Quest since December 2004.

Prucha couldn't say whether the FBI had yet interviewed the 15 suspects.

The killings came less than a week after a Somali pirate was sentenced to more than 33 years in prison by a New York court for the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama. That hijacking ended when Navy sharpshooters killed two pirates holding the ship's captain.

Pirates reacted angrily to the sentencing and have since vowed that they will kill hostages before being captured during military raids and being sent to face trial.

That could represent a serious change from the time when pirates were believed to be disgruntled and financially motivated Somali fishermen angry that international trawlers were illegally fishing Somalia's waters.

Criminal gangs now dominate the piracy trade, and have begun systematically torturing hostages, including tying them upside down and dragging them in the sea, locking them in freezers and beating them. Pirates have also used the hostages as human shields.

"What we're seeing is that because of the business model the pirates have adopted is so lucrative that you're now getting organized criminal gangs involved as opposed to fisherman who just decided to have a go at piracy," Wing Commander Paddy O'Kennedy, spokesman for the European Union's anti-piracy force.

"Criminal gangs are more violent than your average fisherman who's turned to piracy," O'Kennedy said.

Piracy has plagued the shipping industry off East Africa for years, but the violence used during the attacks — and the money demanded in ransoms — have increased in recent months. Pirates now hold some 30 ships and more than 660 hostages.

The average ransom now paid to pirates is in the $5 million range, a huge leap from only three or four years ago when it was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, said Roger Middleton, a piracy expert at the London-based think tank Chatham House. One ransom paid last year was just shy of $10 million.

"It's really gone up, really an enormous amount," Middleton said. "If you think you can get a $9.5 million ransom, I suppose the logic is that you try any means possible to get there, and if that means scaring some crews and owners more, I guess that's what you do," he said, alluding to the recent reports of torture.

Industry experts warned Wednesday that there is still a key piece of missing information after the deaths of the four Americans on Tuesday, and it's not clear if the deaths will require a wholesale change in the way the shipping industry and the militaries patrolling the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean operate.

The U.S. military said a pirate fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a Navy warship, and that gunfire was heard on board the Quest. Why that violence broke out — whether because of an internal pirate fight or an attempted escape by the hostages — is not publicly known.

"For us it's too soon. We don't know what happened yesterday so we're not going to make any knee-jerk decisions," O'Kennedy said. "But our policy remains the same. Nothing is off the table. All options are open to us as a military force."

Palestinians to hold local polls on July 9

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – The Palestinian cabinet decided on Tuesday to hold local elections on July 9, in what will be the first time the people have gone to the polls since 2006.

"The cabinet decided during its meeting today to hold local elections on Saturday 9 July and charged the electoral commission with making the necessary preparations for it," government spokesman Ghassan Khatib told AFP, reading from an official statement.

Local polls were originally set for July 17, 2010 but postponed after the Islamic Hamas movement, which rules Gaza, said it would not participate.

Hamas on Tuesday reiterated its refusal to participate in polls run by the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, which is dominated by the rival Fatah movement, meaning the elections are likely to be limited to the West Bank.

"These elections are not valid because they are called for by the Palestinian Authority and the government and are devoid of legitimacy," spokesman Fawzi Barhum told AFP in Gaza City.

"We in Hamas will not participate in this farce and will not recognise the result of it."

The last time the Palestinians went to the polls was in 2006 for legislative elections, which Hamas won by a landslide.

Since January 2009, when Mahmud Abbas's four-year term as president expired, Hamas has refused to recognise the authority of his government. Abbas's term in office has been indefinitely extended pending new elections.

Last week, prime minister Salam Fayyad said local polls would be held "this year" and that it was time to start preparing for a general election, prompting another denunciation from Hamas.

Hamas says there can be no fresh vote without reconciliation with the rival Fatah party, which is headed by Abbas and dominates the Palestinian Authority.

The Gaza Strip and the West Bank are separated by Israeli territory and are ruled by rival administrations.

The Ramallah government had called a general election for January 2010 but backed down after Hamas refused to hold parallel polls in Gaza.

A year after winning the 2006 elections, Hamas ousted its Fatah rivals from the Gaza Strip following a week of bloody street battles, bringing to a head many years of bitter rivalry between the two movements.

Local elections were last held across the Palestinian territories in 2005.

Fayyad's announcement that the Palestinian Authority would start preparing for a general election was made as massive anti-government protests swept through Egypt, calling for the removal of President Hosni Mubarak.

An earlier wave of mass protests in Tunisia succeeded in forcing out president Zine El Abdine Ben Ali, sending shock waves across the Middle East and prompting a number of regional governments to make hasty changes in a bid to avoid a similar fate back home.

Chrysler's 'embarrassing' decision to spend $9 million on a Super Bowl ad

Chrysler broadcast an epic two-minute commercial during the Super Bowl that was less a traditional car ad than a tribute to Detroit. (See video below.) The commercial — the longest in Super Bowl history — proved a , who connected with its stirring imagery and hopeful message about the struggling city's future. But not everyone was left inspired by Chrysler's paean to the Motor City. A Republican congressman and other conservativesthat Chrysler still owes the government $5.8 billion in bailout money, and that spending millions on an ad is problematic for a beleaguered company in debt. (Chrysler's CEO says the ad cost less than $9 million.) Was the car maker right to splurge on its buzzworthy spot?

The ad was too expensive and misleading: "Chrysler took $15 billion from taxpayers, to which it wasn't entitled," , and made a commercial full of falsehoods. For instance, Chrysler did not "go through the hottest fires," as the ad suggests — unless "hottest fires" means "skipping bankruptcy and asking for a handout toprotect union pensions." This hypocritical ad just goes to show "howthe federal government picks winners and losers. Guess which part thetaxpayers play?"

The commercial was insulting, too: It's bad enough that the U.S. spent billions to rescue Chrysler afterdecades of poor decisions, . The pay-off has been worth it: Despite "advance criticism of Chrysler for making a $9 million commitment," , this ad has made an almost unprecedented impact. It continues to "live large on the internet." More than 2,000 news organizations have mentioned it, generating more than 200 million web hits. On YouTube, "the video has been viewed more 1.2 million times in less than 24 hours." And the "ad is already proving its value." Web-traffic to the Chrysler 200 site increased more than 1,600 percent in the hours after the ad aired.

Horford's FTs lift Hawks past Clippers, 101-100

ATLANTA – Al Horford made two free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining following a flagrant foul by Blake Griffin, giving the Atlanta Hawks a 101-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

Griffin sent Marvin Williams and then Horford to the floor with hard fouls in the final seconds. The last was the most costly, though Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro argued against the flagrant 1 ruling.

Jamal Crawford had 34 points, 16 in the third quarter. Atlanta's two All-Stars had big games: Horford had 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Joe Johnson added 17 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.

Baron Davis had 22 points and 13 assists for Los Angeles. Griffin, the NBA's first rookie All-Star selection since Yao Ming in 2003, had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Eric Bledsoe made two free throws after he was fouled by Crawford with 11.5 seconds left to give the Clippers a 100-99 lead. The Clippers' Randy Foye then blocked a shot by Johnson and the ball bounced out of bounds as the two players fought for possession.
