Peu connaissent l’actuelle Présidente d’Oracle. A la tête de l’empire américain du logiciel, Safra Catz, 50 ans, préfère se montrer efficace… tout en restant discrète. Très discrète.

Pour le commun des mortels, son nom n’évoquera rien. Même pour la plupart des geeks, Safra Catz est sans doute une parfaite inconnue. Pourtant, l’actuelle boss d’Oracle fait partie des femmes qui comptent dans la Silicon Valley, certains observateurs la qualifiant même de « Steve Jobs du sofware« .
Oracle, l’éditeur américain de logiciels, de progiciels de gestion et leader mondial des bases de données, a confié les rênes de l’entreprise à cette israélo-américaine en 2004, alors que Larry Ellison, qui avait fondé en 1977 ce qui allait devenir un empire, voulait prendre du recul.

Longtemps comparé à Bill Gates, ou au Mick Jagger des TIC, le redoutable homme d’affaires avait préféré propulser à la tête de sa société Safra Catz, sa directrice financière, réputée pour être une « surdouée des lignes de bilan ».

La presse en ligne de mire

Sur le site d’Oracle, la biographie de cette jolie brune quinquagénaire tient en huit lignes seulement. Elle n’évoque même pas son arrivée dans le Massachussets à l’âge de 6 ans, ni son diplôme de la Brookline High School. Tout juste apprend-t-on qu’Oracle l’avait recrutée en avril 1999 chez Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, une banque d’investissement. Jusqu’alors, la carrière de cette fille d’un physicien nucléaire et d’une rescapée de l’Holocauste, avait beaucoup été axée sur l’industrie des produits software, se taillant une solide réputation en représentant les intérêts commerciaux de Softbank, Symantec et déjà d’Oracle.

Pour autant, rien ne semblait alors distinguer cette executive woman d’une autre. Citée par le magazine Fortunes en septembre 2009, Cristina Morgan alors vice-présidente de la banque J.P. Morgan confessait : « Jamais je n’aurais pu imaginer qu’un jour, elle brasserait des milliards de dollars ! ». Réputée pour faire passer ses clients au premier plan, servir tant les intérêts de Larry Ellison que ceux d’Oracle, la superboss s’implique dans tous les dossiers, ne lâchant jamais rien. Elle est aussi connue pour sa discrétion légendaire, ne concédant que de très rares interviews à la presse, qu’elle ne considère d’ailleurs pas comme « une amie».

La petite histoire veut que Safra Catz ait enjoint son service de presse à inviter les journalistes les plus virulents à aller « se faire f… » et ce, avec sa propre bénédiction !

Devant Steve Jobs

Pendant ce temps, Catz occupe le terrain, et réussit au-delà des espérances. Déjà présente dans le Top Business Women Forbes de 2007 aux côtés d’une certaine Anne Lauvergeon (ex-boss d’Areva), le portail informatique TechRepublic aligne dès 2008 son nom parmi ceux des leaders les plus influents de la planète : Safra Catz figure alors à le 7e place, derrière Eric Schmidt (Google), et devant un certain Steve Jobs (Apple). En 2009, les bénéfices d’Oracle, en hausse de 1%, frôlent avec les 6 milliards de dollars.

« C’est une réussite incroyable vu ce qui s’est passé dans l’économie mondiale ces douze derniers mois », a précisé Safra Catz. Deux trimestres seulement après le rachat par Oracle de Sun Microsystems (en 2010, moyennant 7,4 milliards de dollars) et l’entreprise est à nouveau devenue profitable. «

Une touche sur l’écran du smartphone pour prendre une photo, une autre pour ajouter un «effet nostalgie» et un dernier coup d'index pour partager l'image avec ses amis. Il suffit de peu pour mettre nos photos sur une machine du temps et les faire sembler comme si elles avaient été prises dans les années Soixante dix. Ceci grâce aux applications comme Instagram, née en octobre dernier et déjà avec plus d'un million d’usagers enregistrés.
Mais au au-delà du goût retrò, la diffusion des connexions en mobilité porte même les passionnés de photographie plus sceptiques à réévaluer les smartphones comme moyen pour immortaliser la vie de tous les jours. Ce n’est pas par hasard que sur Flickr, site de partage d'images populaire, l'appareil le plus utilisé par les usagers est l’iPhone suivi de deux modèles Htc: l'Evo 4g et le Droid Incredible, les deux dotés d'un appareil photo de 8 megapixel.
Quatorze filtres
C’est justement pour le cellulaire d'Apple que naît Instagram, téléchargeable gratuitement a partir d’iTunes Store (la version pour Android est en phase de développement). Lorsque l'application s’ouvre pour la première fois, il faut s'enregistrer mais une fois la procédure terminée, le fonctionnement est semblable à celui de l'appareil photo en dotation.

Il y a par exemple Path, qui impose à ses abonnés une limite de 50 contacts. Pour autant que cela puisse sembler une contradiction en termes, l'idée est celle de réaliser une social network dédié à la photo et au vidéo plus personnel et privé. L'application pour iPhone est gratuite et, même dans ce cas, les usagers d'Android doivent patienter avant d'exploiter les potentialités de Path sur leurs cellulaires.
Relancer les clichés d'une communauté virtuelle à une autre est par contre l'objectif de Picplz application disponible gratuitement soit sur le store d'iTunes que sur l'Android Market. Même dans ce cas il est possible d’ajouter quelque effet à nos créations mais le point de force de l'application est justement dans la simplicité avec laquelle se produit le partage. Ceux qui veulent marier l'amour pour la photographie a celui pour la nourriture ne peuvent pas se laisser échapper Foodspotting. Pour l'utiliser il faut défier les règles du bon ton en immortalisant nos plats au restaurant. Il suffit d’une brève recension du local, l'identification sur la carte et le bouche á oreille en ligne peut commencer. L'application est gratuite pour iPhone, alors que pour Android elle est encore en phase de test.
Pose en stream

Non car: Il est encore trop peu diffusé en France.
PicPlz
Oui car: Application gratuite, soit pour le monde Apple que pour Android. Il est possible d’appliquer divers effets aux images et de les partager avec simplicité.
Non car: A défaut d'une connexion rapide la navigation à l'intérieur de l'application résulte un peu lente.
Foodspotting
Oui car: Le social network pour ceux qui, au-delà des recensions, veulent voir la tete des assiettes dans les restaurants.
Non car: La base de données des locaux français signalés par les usagers est encore misérable.
Dailyboot
Oui car: Les usagers postent chaque jour une photo: à travers la mise à jour en temps réel on fait un tour du monde en images.
Non car: Au-delà des premiers plans des usagers on trouve peu d'occasions vraiment intéressantes.
