- J'ai fait comme toi, j'y ai donné de la térébenthine à mon cheval, mais v'là-t'y pas qu'il est tombé raide mort !

"Hickstead se voyait beaucoup plus grand dans sa tête." Si le talent a ses raisons, celui d'Hickstead est peut-être à chercher dans cette phrase d'Eric Lamaze. Tout petit qu'il ait été, Hickstead était capable de franchir tous les murs, avec une détente, une aisance que pouvaient lui envier ses plus grands concurrents.

Ceux qui étaient au Jumping de La Baule en mai 2011 ne sont pas prêts d'oublier son saut au-dessus du chandelier en fin de parcours .Une petite erreur de trajectoire qui, paradoxalement, en dit plus long sur son talent que tous les sans-faute de sa carrière. Genève (2008), Calgary (2 foix , un des concours le plus dotés au monde), Aix-La Chapelle (2010),Et surtout multimédaillés, dont une médaille de bronze aux Jeux Équestres Mondiaux de Lexington en 2010, où il sera sacré meilleur cheval de la tournante , puis meilleur cheval de l'année dans la foulée.Et un nombre incalculables d'autres victoires et de résultats , jusqu'à se jour maudit du 6 novembre 2011, où il fut un dernier saut avant de s'en allez briller à jamais dans le ciel !

Comme le disait si bien Right Said Fred dans sa chanson « Stand up for the champion « , construit pour être le meilleur , N°1 et rien d'autre .Comme si cette phrase avait été écrite pour lui...

La légende Hickstead

C'est l'histoire d'un petit cheval devenu grand,du champion qui a écrit son propre destin. Si le jumping avait une logique, si l'élevage était une science exacte, si les champions étaient préprogrammés, Hickstead n'aurait jamais dû approcher un CSI de sa vie. Trop petit avec son mètre soixante, il était également réputé trop bouillant, trop fougueux pour la compétition. Mais comme Seabiscuit ou Secretariat avant lui, ce cheval mal né va déjouer tous les pronostics sur un coup du sort. Une rencontre avec un certain Eric Lamaze...

Après la journée, voici la nuit médiévale! La nouveauté cette année c'était un spectacle équestre de nuit... A 22h15 avec un temps digne de l'automne, je n'ai pas regretté d'être restée! J'étais émerveillée, les yeux grands ouverts comme la petite fille qui sommeille en moi! Et avec le nouvel objectif nous nous sommes éclatés! Pas facile de maîtriser les mouvements et la lumière mais le résultat est assez prometteur!
Je vous laisse avec la magie du feu et des chevaux, bien plus parlante que mes mots!

Une journée exceptionnelle, je pense déjà à l'année prochaine! Et ça m'a aussi donné envie de refaire de l'équitation ou des balades à cheval! Bientôt, peut-être?

La fête médiévale façon Game of Thrones...

L'année dernière nous avions assisté à une chouette journée médiévale avec Mr l'Amoureux et cette année nous avions envie d'y retourner! C'était une journée grise mais avec notre nouvel objectif 70-200 L nous n'avons pas du tout pris les mêmes photos et c'était vraiment sympa de comparer ces deux événements! Plongés dans la série Game of Thrones ça nous a bien amusé d'être dans l'univers médiéval le temps de quelques heures!

Frdric Beigbeder : Quand il s'essaye au basket, ce n'est pas triste

Nouvellement cinaste, Frdric Beigbeder qui vient de terminer le tournage de son premier film, L'Amour dure trois ans, l'adaptation d'un de ses propres romans, accumule les activits.

crivain et DJ, souvent chroniqueur, il vient d'acheter un htel et a particip un match de charit de basketball.

Organis par Boris Diaw, le joueur de l'quipe de France, ce match a rassembl son ami Frdric Beigbeder donc, et ses potes Tony Parkeret Ronny Turiaf. Au profit de l'association Babac'ards, qui dveloppe des projets au Sngal pour les jeunes, cette rencontre a eu lieu le 19 juillet Bordeaux.

Compltement dcal, Frdric Beigbeder portait un jean et des mocassins brillants, et visiblement ne savait pas quoi faire de ce ballon orange... Tony Parker, Boris Diaw et les autres ont quant eux fait le show, en enchainant les autographes et les paniers. Un beau moment pour ces jeunes, qui ils offrent du rve, l'image de leur priple au Village Kinder.

Beigbeder a donc achet l'htel 4 toiles la Villa Navarre situ dans le quartier du Trespoey Pau, avec son ami Boris Diaw et l'ancien rugbyman de Bizanos Stphane Carella. Tous trois ont eu le nez pour cet achat qui va leur rapporter gros. Ce magnifique endroit datant de la fin du XIXe sicle, propose des boiseries, des arbres centenaires et un potager, ainsi qu'un bar d'poque en bois dans l'ancienne chapelle et une piscine dans l'ancienne cave vin. Un paradis o Frdric Beigbeder s'installe quand il veut trouver l'inspiration. Dbut juillet ils ont achet la Villa Navarre trois, pour un montant inconnu.

Comme quoi sport et littrature peuvent faire bon mnage.

Harlem Dsir demande la dissolution de la Droite populaire

Le secrtaire gnral du PS par intrim, Harlem Dsir, a demand, jeudi 28 juillet, son homologue de l'UMP, Jean-Franois Cop, de dissoudre le collectif Droite populaire.

Selon M. Dsir, ce collectif, compos d'une quarantaine de dputs UMP incarnant la droite du parti majoritaire, 'instaure une vritable passerelle, un pont permanent entre l'UMP et l'extrme droite'. Pour lui, ce groupe 'joue avec les thmes les pires', comme 'la peur de l'tranger, la peur de l'islam, en organisant jusqu' cette opration saucisson vin rouge dans l'enceinte mme de l'Assemble nationale'.

'Je crois qu'il faut une clarification, je lui demande de mettre les choses au clair et donc de dissoudre ce groupe de la Droite populaire', a dclar Harlem Dsir, en marge d'un dplacement dans le Var.

Angry crows dive-bomb officers in Everett, Wash.

Officers at a Seattle-area police department have found themselves in a flap with some unusual suspects: an angry flock of birds.

Crows have been attacking police in the parking lot of an Everett Police Department precinct station. They've been swooping down and dive-bombing the officers as they walk to and from their cars.

Lt. Bob Johns said he recently was flanked by the aggressive birds and "got zinged."

"They're like velociraptors," Johns said.

One officer used his siren to try to scare away the crows, but it didn't work. The birds responded by decorating his car with droppings, The Daily Herald reported.

State Fish and Wildlife Department biologist Ruth Milner said the birds are simply protecting baby crows that have been kicked out of the nest and are learning to fly. Adult crows are quite protective of their young — a common trait among larger birds and birds of prey.

"All they're doing is defending their nest," Milner said.

She noted crows also can recognize people's individual features. And they hold grudges.

"If your cops have done something that (the crows) perceive as a threat, they could be keying in on them because they're all wearing the same kind of uniform," Milner said.

In addition to the officers, at least a dozen city employees have encountered the angry crows, and some have complained about being attacked, city spokeswoman Kate Reardon said. But she said police and city workers have agreed to let the crows be, and wait out the aggression.

She said the employees will be cautious but can use umbrellas to defend themselves if need be.

Everett is about 25 miles north of Seattle.

NASA readies ocean-watch satellite for Friday launch

The US space agency is ready to launch a satellite to observe levels of salt on the surface of the world's oceans and how changes in salinity may be linked to future climate, NASA said Friday.

"The Aquarius/SAC-D spacecraft has been closed out for flight and is ready for launch," NASA said. The launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California is set for 7:20 am Pacific time (1420 GMT).

The weather forecast on Friday showed a 100 percent change of favorable launch conditions.

The orbiting science instrument will aim to map the entire open ocean every seven days from its position 408 miles (657 kilometers) above Earth, producing monthly estimates that show how salt levels change over time and location.

While a European satellite was launched in 2009 to measure soil moisture and ocean salinity, the Aquarius/SAC-D is a global collaboration -- with partner Argentina as well as France, Brazil, Canada and Italy -- that will add to scientists' knowledge of the oceans in novel ways, NASA said.

Earlier this year, NASA lost Glory, a $424 million Earth-observing satellite that failed to separate properly from its rocket launcher and plunged into the ocean.

De ma fenêtre

À la jumelle, je voyais les départs hâtifs du dimanche. Une fenêtre grande ouverte où les gens s’apprêtent, passent et repassent.

La suspension trop basse où les allées et venues se cognent. (Ils ont rangé la table pour faire de la place.) Un coup de pouce arrête le pendentif.

Un bout de miroir me renvoie le ciel du fond de l’autre. (Je le vois en œil tout grand ouvert dans les ténèbres.)

Un homme vient brosser son chapeau sur la rue.

Ceux qui sont punis s’installent et bâillent à tous les étages.

Ils passent la tête, et tournent, et rentrent, comme un coucou dans sa pendule.

La femme qui profite de son dimanche pour nettoyer, d’un air de stryge intermittente. (Elle secoue l’adieu suprême du mouchoir dans le dos d’un sergent de ville.)

L’employé qui reprend son chef-d’œuvre en bois sculpté à la mécanique. (Est-ce un service de fumeur ? Est-ce un cabaret à liqueurs ?)

Le retraité qui joue du trombone. (Invisible.)

Le monsieur qui prend son parti de passer son dimanche devant sa fenêtre, en bras de chemise. Il vide sa pipe sur la barre d’appui, la rebourre, l’allume, ressemble un instant à Edouard VII, et sursaute ! Une énorme araignée qui lui tombe du ciel lui passe dans la barbe !

C’est un animal japonais, d’ailleurs splendide, qu’un enfant fait descendre, à petites secousses, au bout d’un fil.

Le voilà qui arrive sur le trottoir.

Trois passants s’arrêtent, rentrent le ventre, prennent du champ sur la chaussée, regardent en l’air, se bousculent, et se fendent comme du bois sec.

Il faut se garer des pétards, qui dessinent des nouilles et creusent leur vitesse, ardemment, comme feraient des fossoyeurs qui viendraient de s’apercevoir que la Mort est un crocodile !

Rêverie sur l’omnibus

Pennsylvania Government Employees Directed to Pay Close Attention to Calendars

Most of the commotion comes from press inquiries into the . While his staff rightfully refused personal data and family appointments, as well as security information, the staff also decided that withholding information about meetings between the governor and other people. According to the Office of Open Records, those meetings need to be made public. The administration has even taken the decision to Commonwealth Court to protect that information.

Above and beyond the lawsuit, a memo that was , indicates that state government employees have been advised to review what information is kept on their work calendars, which should be fairly common practice. However, the memo goes a step further and advises employees to clear information after meetings have been completed. While not notorious by any means, the practice is just a way of keeping employees organized and efficient. Still, the Office of Open Records and other officials will likely be keeping an eye on the deletions just to be sure nothing shady is going on.

Surely, most Pennsylvania residents are not interested in the personal contact list and family information of state government employees. Deleting those dates as they are completed should be fairly common practice. In addition, home addresses and telephone numbers, as well as any personal notations, should probably be kept in a separate calendar anyway.

However, much of the professional information is available under the Right-to-Know act. While security and travel arrangements are off limits, as well they should be, other meetings should be made available to the public, as the tax payers are the ones footing the salaries in question. Scrutiny of public officials is not exactly new territory, but the practice of governments issuing guidelines on the use of electronic calendars is somewhat new.

Comme nous l’avons vu dans l’épisode précédent, Cabourg c’est la Promenade Marcel Prous tc’est-à-dire le bord de la plage et les longues balades aller et retour qu’on y fait à longueur de journées. La première impression peut être terne - je parle des mois de printemps car je ne me suis jamais risqué dans la cité en juillet et août où j’imagine que la foule est plus dense, ce qui a mes yeux discrédite toute envie d’y mettre les pieds - mais il faut savoir combattre ses premières sensations parfois.

Une longue plage de sable quasiment déserte de monde, une mer toujours calme quand je suis de passage d’où des vagues modestes qui s’échouent langoureusement sur le sable. Mêmes les mouettes ne se font pas nombreuses et restent discrètes, quelques groupes à marée basse qui picorent à la lisière de l’eau et de la terre ; pour preuve de leur quasi absence, les toits des maisons ne sont pas maculés des traces blanchâtres habituelles dans les ports de pêche, par exemple. L’oiseau marin ne vit pas à Cabourg, il y passe. Un peu comme la majorité de ses habitants semblerait-il quand je constate la quantité impressionnante de logements ou maisons fermés. Parfois des immeubles entiers paraissent inhabités ! Pour en revenir aux oiseaux, un sujet qui m’est cher, quelques mouettes donc, des cormorans aussi près de l’estuaire de la Dives où le limon et le flux marin sont plus propices à leur alimentation. Les seuls volatiles réellement en grand nombre, ce sont les merles et les moineaux auxquels j’ajouterai quelques pies et tourterelles mais à peine.

Sur la plage, toujours aux époques où je fréquente l’endroit, quelques inconditionnels du bronzage, des enfants en bas âge qui barbotent dans les flaques sous le regard des parents attendris mais jamais de baigneurs, l’eau étant trop froide. A marée basse, les pêcheurs de crevettes s’activent dans les vagues, poussant leur filet comme les techniciennes de surface leur balai-éponge. De la Promenade, nous autres vieux assis sur les bancs, les contemplons d’un œil amusé, tandis que de l’autre nous lorgnons un couple de jeunes amoureux se bécotant à pleine bouche accotés à la rambarde de pierre.

Le plus souvent pourtant, le paysage seul suffit à mon bonheur simple. Couleurs changeantes de l’eau et du ciel, alternance de plein soleil et de nuages blancs créant des ombres mystérieuses sur les flots, curiosité éveillée par une voile ou un petit bateau qui passe à l’horizon. Une douce brise agite les drapeaux en haut de leurs mâts plantés sur la Promenade, juste assez forte pour que l’effet esthétique soit parfait.

Mais le fin du fin, ce que je recherche avec impatience, c’est la sortie du matin le long de la plage avec l’espoir de voir des chevaux courir surla grève. Ilsentrent sur la plage par l’extrémité dela Promenade MarcelProust– vers Ouistreham – le plus souvent des chevaux attelés d’un sulky, mais parfois enfourchés simplement d’un cavalier, pour de longues chevauchées sur le sable humide et dur de la plage ou bien dans les premières vagues pour se muscler les pattes. Le spectacle est magnifique, les bêtes sont superbes lancées dans un trot régulier sans excès de vitesse. Tout le monde les regarde passer, comme on ne peut s’empêcher d’admirer une Ferrari qui circule en ville même quand on n’est pas connaisseur ; la beauté pure n’a que faire des mots ou des appréciations, elle est, c’est tout. Plusieurs allers-retours sur la plage et les purs sangs rejoindront leurs écuries, sans un regard sur nous, la piétaille des badauds admiratifs.

Cette année j’ai été gâté, chaque matin de beaux bourrins ont satisfait mes souhaits de la nuit.

Rival wines vie in U.S. court for "mommy" label

Rival wine sellers targeting overworked mothers are fighting over use of the word "Mommy" on their wine labels, according to a lawsuit filed in San San Francisco federal court.

In the suit, filed on Monday, California-based winery Clos Lachance Wines asked the court to declare that its "Mommyjuice" does not violate the trademark of "Mommy's Time Out," which is marketed by a New Jersey distributor.

"'Mommy' is a generic word that they don't have a monopoly on," said KC Branch, an attorney who represents Clos Lachance.

The owner of "Mommy's Time Out" declined to comment on the lawsuit.

To succeed in a trademark violation case, a brand owner must show it is likely that a rival's mark will create confusion in the minds of consumers.

The front label of "Mommyjuice" features a drawing of a woman juggling a house, teddy bear and computer. The back label advises moms to "tuck your kids into bed, sit down and have a glass of Mommyjuice. Because you deserve it." The wine is available in a white Chardonnay and a red mixed blend.

Trademark conflicts between winemakers are relatively common, said Richard Mendelson, a California vintner who teaches a course on wine law at Boalt Hall School of Law in Berkeley.

"For a wine coming out to market, it's hard to find a name that's not in use," he said.

Mendelson also noted that wines with "fanciful" names have proliferated as marketers try to reach new categories of customers. In recent years, vintners have launched wines like "Fat bastard," "Cleavage Creek" and a red wine featuring a rooster called "Big Red Pecker."

League and players adjourn talks until May 16

Mediation between the NFL and its locked-out players has been adjourned until May 16, representatives from both sides said on Wednesday after four days of talks.

"I think this was a valuable process," NFL general counsel Jeff Pash said on the NFL's website. "I don't think a single minute of it was a waste of time."

The ending of the latest round of mediation comes with a federal judge expected to rule soon, perhaps as early as this week, on a NFL players' request that could have a major impact on their labor dispute with league owners.

"Everyone believes it was helpful. That was what the judge wanted, so we follow what the judge wanted," said Jim Quinn, who is serving as the lead lawyer for the players because NFL Players Association outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler was away on a prior commitment.

The players, including high profile quarterbacks Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, are seeking an injunction to halt a league-imposed lockout now in its sixth week.

How Judge Susan Richard Nelson of Minnesota rules could be a significant bargaining chip for either the players or owners in their dispute, legal experts say.

But the judge's decision almost certainly would result in the other side appealing to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, thus lengthening the legal process of the dispute, dubbed as a row between billionaires and millionaires.

Speaking on conference call with New York Giants fans, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he had no feeling about which way the ruling might go or when it might happen.

"That is the judge's decision. She will make that ruling when she is prepared to do it," Goodell said on Wednesday. "At that point in time, we will all obviously respect the ruling and hopefully, we will get back to the point where we are negotiating."

Judge Nelson said on April 6 she would need a couple of weeks to make a decision on the request and Wednesday marked 14 days since her comment.

While both sides are hoping her ruling will favor them, the judge said after hearing arguments in the case, "it seems to me both sides are at risk."

Judge Nelson had ordered the mediation under federal magistrate Arthur Boylan in an attempt to push the parties toward resolving the dispute themselves.

Some progress has been made but much remains to be done, sources told the league-owned NFL Network.

NLRB COMPLAINT

Along with the injunction request, the players have filed an antitrust lawsuit against the owners. That, too, must be resolved.

Both sides also are awaiting a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on an owners' complaint against the since-decertified players union. A ruling favoring the owners could bring the sides back to the bargaining table, where talks broke down March 11.

Ultimately, the two sides must reach a new collective bargaining agreement and settle a major impasse of how to divide $9 billion in annual league revenue.

The league, meanwhile, is preparing for a return to the playing field by September's start of the regular season.

"We released the schedule yesterday and we're planning to start the season on time," declared Goodell. "We're planning on playing a full season and we're going to negotiate as hard as we can to get that done.

"You obviously have to be prepared if you're unsuccessful. But I don't like to focus on that. I like to focus on being successful.

"There's a lot at risk for everybody involved ... we're going to continue to make the preparations for the season and work as hard as we can to solve those issues in advance so that we can play every game and every down of the season."

Report: Student conflict common in Philly schools

A commission investigating racially motivated attacks against Asian students in Philadelphia has found conflicts among all types of groups are widespread in the district.

The report was released Tuesday by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. It calls for school officials to improve the climate by reducing language barriers and implementing clear and consistent policies for resolving conflicts. Its recommendations are advisory only.

The commission based its report on testimony from 11 public hearings it held after about 30 Asian students were assaulted at South Philadelphia High School in December 2009.

The school district agreed in December to state and federal oversight for the next 2 1/2 years to address the anti-Asian violence.

District spokeswoman Jamilah Fraser says officials will review the report.

Djokovic, Berdych reach Dubai semifinals

Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic defeated Florian Mayer of Germany 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the Dubai Championships semifinals, where he will face Tomas Berdych.

Djokovic, the two-time defending champion in Dubai, trailed 5-3 in the first set before winning the final four games when his opponent's serve abandoned him. The third-ranked Serb easily won the second set to reach his fourth consecutive semifinal in Dubai.

Djokovic struggled early with the 38th-ranked Mayer's serve, backhand slice and aggressive net play.

"The ball was going faster today, and he took it to me from the start," Djokovic said. "Already first game he was on the net, twice, three times. I was not moving my legs well. I was making lots of unforced errors."

Next up is Berdych, who Djokovic beat in the Australian Open quarterfinals on his way to winning his second Grand Slam.

"Yeah, tough one. He's playing really well in the last year and a half," Djokovic said. "He's a quite consistent player right now. He has a very powerful serve, very fast baseline strokes, very flat, so I guess I need to be patient and wait for my chances."

Berdych beat Phillip Petzschner of Germany 7-5, 6-4. The third-seeded Czech broke Petzschner three times in the first set but dropped serve twice. Berdych wasted six set points, closing it out when the 73rd-ranked German hit a forehand long.

The second set was just as close, with Berdych's decisive break making it 5-4. Berdych said he had trouble with the big-serving Petzschner.

"That's the way what Philipp likes to play — big serves, sometimes come to the net, a lot of slice in the backhand side and then he just makes a winner like that," he said. "Just not give you a rhythm on court at all."

Why I won't be watching the Super Bowl: Football is un-American

Brookline, Mass. – This Sunday most of America will be watching that uniquely American spectacle known as the Super Bowl. Even casual fans will tune in because theyve bought into the concept that the commercials an ordinary and somewhat onerous distraction on any other day of the year are high art, must-see TV that evening.

I used to play my part in the annual extravaganza, dutifully marching off to show up at a Super Bowl party and even hosting a few myself. But Ive since given up on the game of American football for the simple reason that it doesnt fit in with American values. Let me explain.

In many ways, football, which has somehow ascended to the top of American culture, is paradoxically the most un-American of sports. Americans who celebrate modern football as the every man sport are duped. With its defined roles built right into the fabric of the game and a predictable storyline contingent on those roles, theres little room for social mobility. American football is like Old Europe.

More than any other sport, football viewing has also been overtaken by new media. That means heavily managed pervasive commercialism intermingled with sports commentary. The average sofa spectator isnt watching unbridled team athleticism and split-second cooperation so much as hes consuming perfectly engineered commercial breaks. And at every interruption, hes fed instant analysis from the sports center aristocracy expertly designed to give him the feeling of inclusiveness.

The real drama of other sports Please dont dismiss me as a non-sports fan. I wouldnt think of missing the World Series or the NBA Finals. I marvel at the Olympics and the World Cup. Ive simply come to the realization that American football is actually a faux sport, closer to the Disney World that the Super Bowl MVP would claim that he was going to than the real drama that one might see at other sporting venues.

Sports are magnificent. At their best, they represent our noblest efforts to surpass our human boundaries. The high jump, long jump, and pole vault may be our purest attempt to slip the bonds of gravity. Individual sports also give us a window into what its like to compete against ourselves. Who hasnt gasped in awe at spectacular one-on-one clashes that have been so epic in nature that the names of the competitors will now and forever be connected with a hyphen, as if theyve become a single entity, such as Ali-Frazier or Federer-Nadal?

Even weekend warriors can replicate that feeling by being so evenly matched against another on the golf course or tennis court that it seems as if one is competing against oneself. With that comes the exhilarating realization that only by reaching down deep within ourselves and accessing a better, previously unexplored part, will we prevail. The result can be as personally transformative as when Jacob wrestled the angel.

Team sports contain all of that and much more still. Aside from dealing with a formidable opponent, one also has to make oneself a viable part of a team. This means retaining ones individuality while joining with a group of individuals for a common goal. This happens all the time, of course, but rarely outside of the sports field (or perhaps a jazz band jam session) does it soar to the level that it forms an entity so dynamic and cohesive, it creates its own separate consciousness. The result can be almost transcendental. I feel sorry for those whove never experienced it.

It's not an everyman game This is where football comes up short of even a first down. The facade of team cohesiveness is there, of course. How else could they march up the field? But the individuals have long ago given up their dynamic individuality to scripted roles that they are supposed to play.

If there is anything that defines us Americans, its that we tend to be iconoclasts. We have a legacy of tearing down the class structure. Its how this country was founded. Thats even truer for those of us who have only been here one or two generations, because we have direct and personal interaction with parents or grandparents who made the ground-breaking decision to reject the old structure and embrace the unbound possibilities of the new. Thats one reason why a healthy infusion of immigration has always been essential. It keeps the American spirit alive.

Baseball, basketball, and soccer are more everyman in nature and, thus, more in line with the American experience of rugged individualism. Anyone on the field or court can (and often does) hit the winning home run or score the winning basket. Shaquille ONeal, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson all led their teams to championships from different positions center, small forward, shooting guard, point guard. In baseball, The World Series MVP could be the second baseman.

Classist, defined roles Football, on the other hand, with its more defined roles of officers (ball handlers) and linemen, is more classist and essentialist. Its a horrible sport for kids, not because of the significant chance of injury, but because of how it will most certainly affect their personality, as they unconsciously conform to the perceptions that others have projected on to them according to the position that theyve been conscripted to play.

How many after-school TV specials involved a high school football team with a handsome ego-driven quarterback; a wide receiver who was somewhat deceptive; a defensive lineman who will stop at nothing to get what he wants; and an offensive lineman who is naively overprotective of those around him or just plain dumb?

Its true that the critically acclaimed show Friday Night Lights has attempted to break down those stereotypes. But Friday Night Lights is in many ways the exception that proves the rule (and a good example of the proper use of the expression). The shows contrasting story lines, such as the fallen quarterback, or the sensitive lineman, wouldnt carry as much weight without our own preconceived notions to challenge that how individuals are supposed to act is based on the position they play, not on who they are.

The illusion of fan involvement So why has football ascended to the pinnacle of American culture, given its restrictive, clichd story line? The answer may be exactly that. Many Americans simply buy into the soap opera. Its reassuring to some to know that the quarterback is married to a supermodel (like Tom Brady) or that hes the son of another quarterback (like the Peytons).

Football also gives many the illusion of control. With its segmented action of downs, its tailor-made for media analysis and commercial breaks. Now, everyone can be a Monday morning quarterback after each and every play. It also allows us to watch each other watch the game. It even allows us to watch the officials as they watch themselves on the instant replay to review the call we just saw them make. All this readily available content pretends to give us ownership and involvement, even connection. But does it really?

As for me, Ill take a pass on the not-so quintessentially American touchdown pass this Sunday. Someone has to break the cycle.

Can Russia rival the X-37B space plane with its own robotic spacecraft?

Moscow – Russia's reviving space industry might be working on its own version of the US Air Force's reusable unmanned space plane. After all, Russian space experts seemed surprised, a little alarmed, and possibly in awe of the American X-37B when it was successfully flight-tested from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on April 22.

The head of Russia's Space Forces, Lt. Gen. Oleg Ostapenko, dropped a tantalizing hint last week that suggested that Russian researchers were working on a similar design.

"Something has been done along these lines, but as to whether we will use it, only time will tell," General Ostapenko was quoted by the official RIA-Novosti agency as saying.

The American X-37B, which spent seven months in orbit doing secret research before returning last December, is a remotely controlled, scaled-down space shuttle-like craft that appears to be dedicated mainly to military tasks.

Most Russian media coverage about the mini-shuttle was dominated by fear. Would the US use the enhanced orbital capabilities the space plane makes possible to undercut Russia's national security? Would the X-37B threaten Russian satellites or even install space-based antimissile weapons?

"The original idea of this space plane was to destroy the enemy's sputniks," says Vladimir Shcherbakov, deputy editor of Vzlyot (Liftoff), a leading Russian aerospace journal.

"It's a kind of space fighter. If your enemy loses all his sputniks which provide his communication, intelligence, navigation, etc. he will be in a panic, he'll be helpless. So it's critical, if you're going to build one, that you state what it's for and whom it's directed against," he says. "The Americans haven't declared who their X-37 is to be used against. They just say they're developing new technologies."

Mr. Shcherbakov says it's quite likely that Russia is working on its own space plane, since the Kremlin nowadays identifies successful space projects as key to boosting Russia's international prestige and has spent a lot more money on the once-moribund space industry.

"Nowadays there's more financing, so the search for cutting-edge projects that we can accomplish is going on intensively," he says. "When the Boeing X-37 was tested, it raised questions from the bosses about whether we were building one, too. But this is a secret subject in the US, and even more so here. So no one will tell you for sure."

The once-mighty Soviet space program virtually collapsed during the 1990s, and its only big remaining project is to act as a kind of "space taxi" to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station.

The USSR built a space shuttle, the Buran, which was modeled on the US version, but only managed to test it twice before the program was scrapped in 1993. The surviving copy of the Buran serves as a children's attraction in Moscow's riverside Gorky Park amusement center.

But with growing financial resources, Russian space scientists have a lot more ideas on their drawing boards these days. These include a nuclear-powered spacecraft that could carry cosmonauts to Mars, and a Pac Man-like nuclear powered space pod that could gobble up space garbage and perhaps be used to protect the Earth from asteroid collisions.

A functioning space plane might be useful for the Russians to service the new Glonass satellite network, Russia's answer to the American GPS system, which is still on track to launch this year despite a disastrous crash that cost the program three satellites last December.

Andrei Ionin, an independent space expert, says that Ostapenko's hint about a Russian version of the X-37B is hard to interpret.

"It is the logic of space research that both Russia and the US usually find themselves doing much the same things," he says. "They built a shuttle, we built a shuttle, and so on. But comments like Ostapenko's should be followed by demonstrations and proper official statements. As things stand, who knows what he meant? Perhaps it was just a bit of PR?"

Daniel Ferrev n'est rien, même pas une petite frappe.
Il passe ses journées à jouer aux courses et le soir s'invite chez sa sœur, mariée à un investisseur immobilier. Bref, un parasite mais rien de plus... Alors la police se demande bien ce qui a pu en faire la cible d'un tireur professionnel. Daniel aussi, d'ailleurs. Surtout lorsqu'il apprend que le tireur a été retrouvé abattu. Comme si quelqu'un cherchait à le protéger... Car il en mettrait sa main à couper : le soir où on a voulu le tuer, tandis qu'il gisait sur le sol, quelqu'un, un ange gardien ?, est venu lui parler et lui a permis de tenir jusqu'à l'arrivée des secours.
Daniel, qui ne veut pas être le dernier à comprendre. Décide de mener l'enquête de son côté, une enquête à l'envers où celui qui est recherché n'est plus l'assassin mais un mystérieux sauveur...

Ce que j’en pense :

Un grand merci à Blog-O-Book qui fait toujours un super travail ! Et merci aux éditions du Masque. Surtout que j’ai eu l’agréable surprise d’avoir un petit mot manuscrit pour me remercier de ce partenariat, alors que c’est moi qui leur suis vraiment reconnaissante. Merci donc à Diane, qui a signé ce petit mot, et aux éditions du Masque.

J’ai longtemps réfléchi et fait quelques recherches pour classer ce livre. On peut dire qu’il est vraiment très spécial. Je ne peux pas le classer dans les romans policiers, car l’action n’est pas centrée sur l’enquête policière. Il n’y a pas de réel suspens en tant que tel, et le mettre en roman d’aventure me ferait vraiment bizarre … Dans mon esprit cela correspond plutôt à un livre dans la trempe d’Indiana Jones. Et voilà que je tombe sur la définition du Roman Noir, sur Wikipédia (merci Wiki ! :P) :
« […]avec pour ambition de rendre compte de la réalité sociétale du pays : crime organisé et terreau mafieux : société clanique, anomie sociale, corruption politique et policière, violences et insécurités urbaines...[…] » et c’est ce qui correspond, à mon sens, le plus à ce roman.
Je vois déjà ce que vous vous dites : mais pourquoi elle monologue sur un détail aussi futile ? Tout simplement parce que j’étais partie dans l’idée que j’allais lire un Polar (je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais dans mon esprit Le Masque est associé aux romans policiers exclusivement !) alors que ce n’est pas du tout le cas. La police est présente au début et au milieu du livre, mais ce sont des apparitions très brèves. Le livre s’attache plus à nous faire suivre la vie d’un « pauvre type » qui ne fait pas grand-chose de sa vie, mais qui ne fait de mal à personne. Et pourtant, on lui tire dessus. Cependant ce n’est pas le plus important puisque le tireur est très vite retrouvé… mort. Non, ce qui importe pour notre narrateur, et personnage principal, c’est de retrouver la personne qui l’a aidé à tenir jusqu’à l’arrivée des secours.

Le personnage principal est à mon sens un anti-héros, il n’a pas grand-chose pour plaire, je ne l’ai pas vraiment trouvé attachant, mais il n’est pas non plus gênant. Par contre j’ai beaucoup aimé le témoignage que nous fait Clara – une prostituée que rencontre et fréquente Daniel – il est vraiment très intéressant et passionnant. Il montre les conditions de vie dans l’Union Soviétique, mais également le « faux passage » de la Dictature à la Démocratie : les choses ne changent pas, il faut juste être plus discret qu’avant quant aux actions illégales. Globalement c’est une histoire qui est captivante, mais tout de même un peu longue par moment, je pense notamment à la première moitié que je n’ai pas vraiment trouvée utile.

Pour ne rien gâcher, la plume de l’auteur est un vrai délice ! En effet, le style est fluide et captivant, tout en restant très simple. C’est très appréciable. Cependant la fin m’a un peu déçue ou frustrée, je ne sais pas trop. Le monologue final de Daniel n’a pas vraiment de sens, et je n’ai pas compris comment le personnage principal a su ce que voudrait le mac de Clara en échange de la liberté de cette dernière. Mais ce ne sont que des détails minimes. Je n’ai sans doute pas été assez attentive dans ma lecture tant j’étais pressée de tourner la page !

En conclusion, ce Roman Noir est tout simplement captivant. Il nous plonge dans l’univers des courses de chevaux – que je ne connaissais pas du tout – et le blanchiment d’argent. Ce n’est pas un polar à proprement parlé, même si on suit le personnage principal dans sa quête de vérité. Une histoire intéressante, même s’il y a quelques longueurs. Pour un premier roman, c’est une réussite !

Le cheval boulonnais est un remarquable cheval de travail et de loisir. il convient à tous les amateurs d'attelage et reste un excellent cheval trés confortable pour la balade montée. C'est le pur sang du cheval de trait mais reste d'une gentillesse inégalable.
Origine :

Le Boulonnais est mentionné dans les chroniques dès le XVIIe siècle, époque de la création de la foire aux poulains de Desvres. D'aucuns font remonter la naissance de cette race à la cavalerie de César, remontée en chevaux orientaux de Numidie et rassemblée en 54 av.JC près de Boulogne pour embarquer vers l'Angleterre. Ce sang oriental a été retrempé par la suite à plusieurs reprises, lors des croisades, de l'occupation espagnole ou du premier empire. On distinguait 2 types de boulonnais - tout d'abord le modèle des « mareyeuses », léger endurant, très apprécié au XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles pour le transport rapide du poisson, la « marée », de Boulogne-sur-Mer à Paris. - ensuite, celui d'un cheval grand et puissant, façonné au XIXe siècle pour le travail des terres à betteraves et leur charroi.

Morphologie :

Le Boulonnais est un cheval de trait d'une grande distinction. Le standard d'aujourd'hui, d'une taille de 1,50 m à plus de 1,70 m, fait apparaître une tête élégante, courte, au front large et plat, à l'oeil très vif d'une grande fierté, les naseaux bien ouverts, les oreilles petites et mobiles. L'encolure est souvent rouée, épaisse et musclée, la crinière double, touffue, pas très longue. Le poitrail est large, les côtes bien arrondies, les épaules parfaitement sorties, le garrot bien placé, mais souvent noyé dans la musculature. Le dos est droit, les membres forts, musclés, les articulations nettes et solides, les jarrets ouverts, les canons courts, les extrémités peu fournies en crins. La robe est grise, du très clair au pommelé foncé,parfois alezan et plus rarement bai brun .

Zone d'élevage :

Des reproducteurs Boulonnais sont recensés dans plusieurs départements du Nord-ouest, principalement Pas-de-Calais, Nord, Somme, Seine-Maritime et Oise. Autrefois, le coeur de l'élevage se situait dans le bas Boulonnais, berceau de la race (en particulier Marquise), dont le sous sol argileux riche en phosphates a permis le développement de forts squelettes d'animaux de grande taille. Le haut Boulonnais, berceau des mareyeuses aux plateaux crayeux perméables et aux hivers rudes, dont sont issus des modèles plus légers, le Calaisis, produisant des chevaux d'une plus grande ampleur et la région de Rue, au sud du Boulonnais, donnant des chevaux forts. Aujourd'hui, les faibles effectifs en font une race en conservation génétique malheureusement dépourvue de zone d'élevage à l'étranger. Depuis quelques années, les effectifs des Boulonnais sont en baisse de cent saillies cette année.

Aptitudes et utilisations :

Energique, actif, aux allures brillantes, le Boulonnais est un excellent cheval de traction utilitaire ou de prestige. Il est très apprécié pour l'élégance de ses attelages et participe avec succès à des courses montées et à des compétitions d'attelage. Une course d'endurance de 24 heures est maintenant organisée tous les deux ans, début septembre, de Boulogne-sur-Mer à Paris : la route du poisson.
le boulonnais a la particularité d'avoir des poulains d'une couleur brune lors de ses premiers mois, ce pelage change de couleur à la premiére mu au printemp suivant.

Washington beats Oregon State in 2OT

SEATTLE – Washington always found a way to lose close games last season.

This year, the Huskies are 2-for-2 in finishing off tight games.

"Today in overtime proved it. We were really, really sound. We executed well, we were able to move the ball and we were able to make things happen," Washington quarterback Jake Locker said.

Locker threw a career-high five touchdown passes, two in overtime to Jermaine Kearse, and Oregon State's 2-point conversion attempt in the second overtime fell incomplete as the Huskies beat the No. 24 Beavers 35-34 on Saturday night.

A wild and chilly night along the edge of Lake Washington ended in the Huskies' favor, but only after Washington blew an early 21-0 lead and celebrated a bit prematurely in overtime.

At the end, Washington (3-3, 2-1 Pac-10) snapped a six-game losing streak to the Beavers and kept its bowl hopes alive with a victory it absolutely needed facing a gauntlet of Arizona, Stanford and Oregon the next three weeks.

It also backed up the growth the Huskies showed two weeks ago with their last-second win over Southern California on the road.

"We're coming to the realization as a football program that winning is really hard," Washington coach Steve Sarkisian said. "We've got a football team still learning their way, but they made us very proud tonight."

That learning was never more evident than the second overtime with the Huskies' defense on the field after Locker hit Kearse with a 21-yard TD strike for a 35-28 lead.

After giving up a 23-yard pass from Ryan Katz to Jordan Bishop on third-and-20 to keep the Beavers drive moving, the Huskies thought the game was over when Katz's fourth-down pass for John Reese fell to the turf in the end zone. The Huskies stormed the field, only then to realize a late flag from back judge Johnny Jenkins was for pass interference against Desmond Trufant.

"I wish it wasn't called," Sarkisian deadpanned.

Jacquizz Rodgers then scored from the 2 on the next play to pull Oregon State to 35-34. Beavers coach Mike Riley called timeout and decided to end it there. But Katz's throw fell out of Joe Halahuni's hands as he was hit by linebacker Cort Dennison and Washington's celebration was on again.

"I did anything I could to make sure he wasn't going to catch it," Dennison said. "All that matters is we won. I don't care if I got my hand on the ball."

None of the Beavers second-guessed Riley's decision to end it there.

"I'm all for it. If we make it we're a hero, if we don't we're a zero," Rodgers said. "We had a chance to win that game and we should have."

Oregon State (3-3, 2-1) was stopped short in its attempt to begin conference play 3-0 for the first time in 42 years, but it wasn't for the lack of effort by Rodgers.

Rodgers ran for 140 yards on 32 carries and three touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 49 yards and a 10-yard TD catch in the first overtime. The Beavers were playing their first game since Rodgers' brother, James, was lost for the season because of a serious knee injury.

Katz was 17 of 31 for 206 yards, but threw three interceptions, including one in the end zone to Washington freshman Sean Parker in the third quarter when the Beavers appeared ready to take the lead. Katz had just one interception entering Saturday night.

"I just got to take care of the football," Katz said. "When you give them three interceptions, they have a good chance of winning the game, especially with a good quarterback like they have."

And Locker was very good, especially in the first 20 minutes when Washington jumped to a 21-0 lead. Locker hit 10 of his first 14 throws for 175 yards and three TDs. He finished 21 of 35 for 286 yards and ran for another 60 yards. Chris Polk rushed for 105 yards for Washington, while Kearse had nine catches for 146 yards and four touchdowns. Kearse had TD catches of 16 and 45 yards in the first half, and his four TD grabs set a school record.From there, the two teams combined for 13 consecutive scoreless drives. Not that there weren't chances for both sides.

Oregon State was poised to take the lead late in the third quarter but on third-and-goal from the 13, Katz floated a poor pass into the end zone that was easily intercepted by Parker.

Then it was Washington's turn for a miscue. The Huskies moved to the Oregon State 23 early in the fourth before Locker was sacked by Dwight Roberson on third down and Erik Folk's 45-yard field goal attempt went wide left with 8:49 left. It was just the second miss of the season for Folk.

Locker later fumbled ending another Huskies drive, his second fumble of the night after colliding with D'Andre Goodwin on the opening drive of the game and turning the ball over at the Oregon State 10.
